Taking sides might be too strong a wording, but some usual GOP Trump supporters are notably silent after the classified documents mishandling indictment. Leaders like Mitch McConnell, John Thune, and John Cornyn have stayed out of the fray, and reports state that they are ready to move on from the former Cheeto-in-Chief. Others like Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise have sycophantically rushed to Trump’s defense.
It seems like McTurtle and others like him are hoping the DOJ takes Trump out before the 2024 election, but they’re also going to use the press to wind up Trump supporters and squeeze as much political capital as they can get out of this. But the Republican primary will be in the rearview mirror before this case even sees a day in court.
“This is going to disrupt the nation because it goes to the core of equal justice for all, which is not being seen today.”
Kevin McCarthy
I don’t get how anyone could take this stance. Holding our leaders accountable for their actions is literally the foundation on which America was formed. By all appearances, Trump has been afforded a considerable amount of latitude that others would not have gotten. He had 18 months of opportunities to get on the right side of this; did Chelsea Manning or Reality Winner get the same opportunities? Reality Winner received a 5-year sentence for leaking ONE document detailing Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“It is an affront to our country’s glorious 246-year legacy of independence from tyranny, for the incumbent president of the United States to leverage the machinery of justice against a political rival.”
Ted Cruz
Trump wasn’t indicted by Biden. He wasn’t indicted by investigator Jack Smith or Attorney General Merrick Garland. He was indicted by 21 American citizens who reviewed evidence and agreed that there is a solid, winnable case that Trump willfully stole, carelessly stored, and divulged classified materials, and then willfully obstructed an investigation into the same. The grand jury voted to hold Trump accountable to the same standard as every other American. And Trump will have his day in court.
