On July 4, the official GOP Twitter account tweeted “247 years ago, our forefathers told Ol’ King George to get lost! Happy Independence Day from the GOP!” Along with a graphic of the Liberian flag. 😏
Liberia is a West African nation that was originally founded by the American Colonization Society, who formed the colony as a solution for “rehoming” newly freed Black Americans.
Yeah, honest mistake. The tweet, not the colony. But the quick deletion and Twitter backlash were still funny.
